LandedGentry@lemmy.zipto Games@lemmy.world•PS5 beats PS4 in monthly players for the first timeEnglish61·20 hours agoUndoubtedly faster but not as useful of a metric as units sold IMO just because centrality of online gaming now compared to back then. For instance, I don’t think there was a single free online game back then Whereas now you have a few pretty major titles that are free to play even without an online subscription.

Fucking insane shit. You can bet I’m always looking out for red flags on my friends as their kids get older, in case they fall into one of these traps.

LandedGentry@lemmy.zipto A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•Facebook advertised a professional child kidnapping service to meEnglish81·3 days agoThat’s the other twisted side of all of this. Most of the time, it’s parents who think they are doing what is best for theirchildren. They truly want them to be happy and are just doing the best they can. These horrible organizations suck up their money and prey on their hope

LandedGentry@lemmy.zipto A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•Facebook advertised a professional child kidnapping service to meEnglish201·3 days agoWhen your kid has behavioral issues that start spiraling out of control, it can put a ton of strain on you and your family, especially if there isn’t a mental health diagnosis (often ignored and even then not a given!). It canbecome all consuming. You can’t send them to hang out with friends, you can’t send them to school, you can’t do anything without them likely lashing out or otherwise causing issues that disrupt everyone’s life constantly. That does not mean the kid is doing something wrong, the reality is just that it can be incredibly difficult to deal with day in and day out for.
At some point you’ll look for anyone that says “I can fix this. We can teach your kids what they need to learn.”
LandedGentry@lemmy.zipto A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•Facebook advertised a professional child kidnapping service to meEnglish49·3 days agoThe parents often truly do not understand how bad these camps are and are often deceived by the institutions themselves. Part of the strategy is to make the treatment so outlandish and to use such strange terminology that the kids can’t properly communicate the abuse without sounding insane. Then they keep telling the parents “no matter what don’t listen to them. They will lie to get out of this. They need to finish it, to see it through, or they will end up in juvie on worse.”
It’s horrific
LandedGentry@lemmy.zipto Technology@lemmy.world•Menstrual tracking app data is a ‘gold mine’ for advertisers that risks women’s safetyEnglish12·3 days agoNot knowing how to install F Droid/to look for open source projects for sensitive data is not the same as voting for Trump or supporting Russia over Ukraine. The latter are taking bad information/prejudices and acting on them. The other people simply are not aware of the issue, or how serious of an issue personal privacy has become more broadly. Comparing them to MAGA and calling them stupid is not going to help them.
I bet if I looked at your smart phone or computer I would see plenty of services you use that compromise your privacy. Should I call you an ignorant hypocrite and berate you as well?
LandedGentry@lemmy.zipto Technology@lemmy.world•Menstrual tracking app data is a ‘gold mine’ for advertisers that risks women’s safetyEnglish16·3 days agoEverybody’s a bad ass talking about Darwin awards when that’s something they understand, but suddenly you will expect sympathy when it’s something you don’t. Maybe try havinga little more empathy for the people of the world who are not as aware of how bad privacy has gotten. Believe it or not, we are of a minority perspective. A very small one at that.
I’m more inclined to believe it’s partially a failure on our part to educate people, but mostly the issue is that it’s not a fair fight. You are expecting the average person to successfully overcome the resources and influence of sometimes decades old, billion dollar, multinational companies and governments. But I guess it’s a lot easier to just call everybody who doesn’t take this as seriously as we do a dumbass. Certainly allowed you to wipe your hands of it and act smug that’s for sure.
LandedGentry@lemmy.zipto Technology@lemmy.world•Menstrual tracking app data is a ‘gold mine’ for advertisers that risks women’s safetyEnglish171·3 days agoI get what you’re trying to say, but this is basically just roundabout victim blaming. Women shouldn’t have to worry about whether or not someone is going to weaponize data on their menstrual cycle against them. Yes it is good to lock your door at night, but ultimately you don’t blame somebody for getting robbed just because they didn’t lock it. You blame the thief.
Not everybody is as aware of privacy issues as the rest of us. We have to help them, not berate them.

It’s worked well for valve in the wake of the steam machine flopping. They’ve got like 20mill+ gamepass subscribers so clearly there’s something to what they’re doing, even if it isn’t the “Netflix of video games” scale they were hoping for.
Hell notice valve has made it very clear they are not making another steam deck anytime soon, they are perfectly content getting third-party vendors to build handles that handles their OS/software as the flagship product. Exactly what Microsoft just did with their handheld.
Idk I think Microsoft is actually on to something here. The question is can they find more casual audiences to buy handheld hardware that is built around their ecosystem at such a price point ($700+) and/or invest in a window/xbox library when they’re clearly abandoning the Xbox as a central product. Xbox brand is already kind of lukewarm in the public. Not dead, but certainly not thriving.
