Gsus4@mander.xyzOPto Europe@feddit.org•NATO ally (Sweden) reveals mass act of unexplained sabotageEnglish6·1 day agorussia has been found to pay delinquents and gangs to sabotage stuff in their countries. A conspiracy nut would probably be even cheaper, you just have to wind them up enough.
They think the social state was built at the expense of defense spending (it wasn’t, it was originally indirect “cognitive” defense spending as a middle ground against soviet communism) and they probably think that Europe not being a social shithole like the US hinders their neofascist plans.
Now if you’re asking why MAGA “conservatives” hate liberalism…you gotta ask them why they think the founding fathers and Jesus are woke…I have no idea there.

Maybe they’re trying to divide the load among different servers, so they don’t serve .world as the obvious default choice.

Gsus4@mander.xyzto World News@lemmy.world•World won’t forget Tiananmen Square, US and Taiwan say on 36th anniversary of massacreEnglish212·3 days agoThe most intriguing alt-history stuff I’ve read about it was that the protesters were “lefties” protesting the Dengist attempts at liberalization and confucianist reform, because in one of the videos the protesters were singing socialist anthems e.g. 1st international. It looked like the last gasp of the cultural revolution. But I’m not sure how to check any of this (certainly not from the Chinese archives and the rest of the world only has videos…and the cables you mention), it’s probably just another bullshit story to cover up what happened.

Violent overthrow of East Timor (widely considered a genocide)
Ok, this was Indonesia, with murican quiet assent, but still, don’t give other countries a pass on these things to make them look clean.
Many of these also involved the local elites going to the US for help. e.g. The draft UN resolution for the no-fly zone in Lybia was produced by the Arab League and backed by the African Union, which pressured russia and China not to veto it.

Gsus4@mander.xyzto Buy European@feddit.uk•Denmark’s two largest cities - Copenhagen and Aarhus - set in motion plans to remove ties to Microsoft.41·3 days agoLetting parliamentarians retire early is not just good for them (it’s a cushy job anyway, don’t they want to keep their perks?), it is better for the country to let younger people take their place. As an example of corruption, this is the worst I’ve heard.
